This website rates To Kill A Mockingbird 8.5 Finches out of Ten. As for a small summary, it is narrated by a girl by the nickname of Scout (real name Jean Louise Finch), through her time as a young girl. Scout is young and she narrates her life and the events that lead up to her brother Jem breaking his arm. Jem breaking his arm is the focus of the story. This novel is set in the fictional county of Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. The main conflict of the story, involves Scout’s father, Atticus. Atticus (who is a lawyer) appointed himself to a case to defend Tom Robinson. Tom was accused of rapeing a white girl by the name of Mayella Ewell. Atticus endures harsh actions from the other townsfolk, like Mayella’s father, Bob Ewell. Atticus is looked down upon by others and Scout and Jem are both introduced to everything. At the same time, Scout and Jem try to find out whether a supposed mysterious neighbor by the name of Arthur “Boo” Radley really exists. This novel is unlike any novel we have read before.
What that means, is that there are a lot of unique storytelling ideas that we haven’t seen before. The most unique technique in our eyes would be the symbolism. There are so many examples of symbolism found throughout the novel. As for a few examples, on page 127, Atticus shoots a sick dog. Atticus was revealed as racist, but not in the novel. We believe that when he takes his glasses off, he is blindly shooting racism in Maycomb. The dog is racism and Atticus doesn’t want to stop racism.
The characters feel realistic and for the most part, are likable. Calpurnia, the maid to Atticus, is very kind to Jem and Scout. She teaches the two lessons when she deems it necessary. Scout, the protagonist, is somewhat of an average child. She remains perfectly capable throughout the novel, and remains curious. The characters also go through development and changes. One example of that is Jem. Jem turns twelve about midway through the novel, and we as the readers get to see him grow and turn away from Scout. Scout (as previously mentioned) is curious and continues to ponder her surroundings.
This novel remains very unique and interesting because it constantly introduces new and interesting characters. It also has a few twists and turns as well. At some points, some characters go through some things, we never considered. Not to specify though, in case of spoilers. If there were any negatives to this novel, we would say that at some points the novel carries on for too long. The novel can become boring at points, and often requires separate explanations to fully understand what is going on.
In all, we enjoyed, To Kill A Mockingbird, and found only small downsides to it. This novel is again, unlike anything we have read before. It introduces many unique examples of symbolism, as well as many interesting characters. We enjoyed our experience going through Maycomb county in Alabama. There are so many elements of this book that were not discussed here. All of this makes it worth your while to take the time to read and think. In the end, To Kill A Mockingbird, is a worthy read.
